Deborah Cohen had her article, "Who Was Who?: Race and Jewishness in Turn of the Century Britain," accepted for publication by the Journal of British Studies.
Bob Crews's article, "Civilization in the City: Architecture, Urbanism, and the Colonization of Tashkent," will be included in a "big" format collection of essays, Architectures of Identity in Russia, 1500-2000, by Cornell, scheduled for a fall 2002 publication.
Allan Lichtman is heavily involved as a consultant and expert witness in congressional redistricting cases. The first suit filed in New Jersey was a victory; suits are now pending in Illinois, Texas, and Virginia.
Pam Nadell's newest book, co-edited with Jonathan D. Sarna, just appeared: Women and American Judaism: Historical Perspectives (Brandeis University Press/University Press of New England, 2001).
April Shelford's paper, "Secret Quarrel, Public Stakes: A Story of Censorship in Seventeenth-Century France," was well received at the Third Annual Conference of the International Society of Intellectual History at Trinity College, Cambridge, on July 27.
Students:
Anne Rush received the first Brown Dissertation Fellowship. Anne will teach one course in the spring semester, HIST-321, "War and Peace: From Bismarck to Hitler."
Raffaella Luciani received the first Breitman Fellowship. Through the generosity of Margaret Anthon and named in honor of Richard and Carol Breitman, this endowed award provides an additional $2000/year stipend to a full-time doctoral student, with a preference for a student studying European history.
Teresa Brown received the Anthon Award. Originally funded througha generous gift from Margaret Anthon and named in honor of our colleague Carl Anthon, this award carries a stipend of $1000/year for additional support of an outstanding student in European history.
Alums and ABDs:
Moira Mcguire, PhD 2000, published her first article, "Motherhood, Morality, and Identity in 20th Century Ireland," in the summer 2001 issue of Feminist Studies. The Journal of Social History has also accepted one of Moira's essays for publication. Moira was awarded a Government of Ireland Post-Doctoral Fellowship for AY 2001-2002 at the National University of Ireland-Maynooth, where Moira taught her own course last spring.
Moira wrote to the department, "I am only too glad for you to share my 'triumphs' with the Department because, although my intellectual home has been very much on this side of the 'pond' in recent years, these small successes would not have been possible without the intellectual, moral, and financial support that I received from AU over the years."
John Schmitz recently received a research grant from the German Historical Association.
Bernie Unti as quoted in the Baltimore Sun (7/20/01) as an "animal movement scholar" in a lengthy article about an animal rights activist from Bernie's neighborhood in Canton.
