The Role of the Arts in International Relations at the Library of Congress (Updated 10/23/12)

Please join American University's Initiative for Russian Culture as it explores and celebrates the role of cultural exchange and cooperation in international relations. Our speakers will be the General Director and Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, and Artistic Director of the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, Maestro Valery Gergiev and John R. Beyrle, former US Ambassador to Russia (2008-2012) and Bulgaria (2005-2008). The evening will begin with a buffet dinner on the mezzanine of the Great Hall of the Library of Congress. After the reception, Maestro Gergiev and Ambassador Beyrle will make 15-20 minute remarks about the role of the arts and cultural diplomacy in international relations in the Coolidge Auditorium, followed by a Q&A moderated by the Executive Director of AU’s Initiative for Russian Culture Dr. Anton Fedyashin. The evening will conclude in the Great Hall with a spectacular dessert and a performance by Mariinsky artists. The Library of Congress will also plan an exhibit around Russia’s influence on American music.
This event at the Library of Congress is open to all AU and DC Consortium undergraduate and graduate students, and guests, who must RSVP individually via IRC@american.edu by noon on Friday, 19 October. Please include your school affiliation and graduate or undergraduate status. Students must bring their university and government-issued ID's. Business attire is required. Transportation from AU, Georgetown, GW, UMD (College Park), and UMBC will be arranged. Please see below for pick-up times and locations.

George Washington U: 5:30 p.m. at 22nd and G Streets, NW.
George Mason U: 4:45 p.m. at the Sandy Creek Shuttle Stop
University of Maryland, Baltimore County: 4:30 p.m. at Hilltop Circle at the Flagpole
Return Shuttles: Return shuttles will be available at 11:00 p.m. for all universities.
