American University has approximately 1,100 Jewish undergraduates (approximately 20% of the campus population)


AU Hillel is the center of Jewish student life on campus. Hillel offers religious services, social activities, and volunteer opportunities for students who want to get involved with other Jewish students and the wider AU community. Hillel’s rich programming includes an a capella troupe, a GBLT pride group, an arts and culture council, mentorship programs, and community service initiatives. Its wide range of activities meets the diverse interests of AU’s Jewish students.

Fraternities and Sororities
AU has three Jewish-affiliated fraternities and sororities:

Jewish Student Association
The Jewish Student Association is a student-led, non-denominational group devoted to social, religious, and cultural enrichment. Events and programs focus on the social aspects of Jewish campus life and seek to build a strong sense of community among AU’s Jewish student population. The group is run by a board of 13 students. Exciting yearly events include a Tu B’shvat Seder, the annual Bar Mitzvah party, and Holocaust Remembrance Week. Recent new events have included a murder mystery dinner and a Rosh Hashanah cooking class.

AU Students for Israel
AU Students for Israel (AUSFI) is a student group aimed at increasing awareness of Israel on campus and in the greater DC area. Its programming, educates the campus community about Israel and promotes a positive image of Israel through its culture, history and significance to the world. Additionally, AUSFI promotes advocacy efforts on behalf of Israel and organizes opportunities to get involved at the political level. Its sponsored events—including concerts, film screenings and panel discussions— appeal to the diverse AU student body.
