Summerford (1924 – 2015) studied under Karl Knaths and Sarah Baker at American University’s Department of Art when it was located in the Phillips Gallery School during World War II.  He began teaching at American University in 1951, and remained here until 1987, serving as chairman of the Department of Art frequently from 1957 to 1986.
