Born and raised in Istanbul where she attended French schools, Professor Harris completed most of her undergraduate work in French literature at the Sorbonne. She holds a Master's in French Literature and Linguistics and a PhD in French Literature and Government from Georgetown University. Professor Harris is the author of a book Marguerite Yourcenar: vers la rive d'une Ithaque intérieure (Anma Libri, 1994), as well as articles on Francophone literature and contemporary French society published in refereed journals such as Contemporary French Civilization, French Forum, The French Review, Romance Languages Annual, and Symposium. Professor Harris has co-edited an anthology of Francophone short stories, Monstres et monstruosité slated for publication in 2007 at L'Instant-Même (Montréal). In 2006, Professor Harris was elected for a three-year term to the board of the Conseil International d'Etudes Francophones (CIEF) and is an associate editor of the refereed journal Nouvelles Etudes Francophones. She is currently working on a book on the Francophone writer Andrée Chedid.

Professor Harris's research interests include modern French politics, contemporary French Society, cultural studies, autobiography and 20th century French and Francophone literature. She has recently offered courses on the Francophone Short Story, French Politics and Autobiography.
