MFA Creative Writing | Curriculum

Students in the MFA Program in Creative Writing are required to complete 48 credit hours, and to maintain a B (3.0) average. The course work requirements are as follows:

Creative Writing Workshops: LIT 700, LIT 701, LIT 702, and LIT 704 (12 to 15 credit hours)

Workshops in the writing of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction, each worth three credit hours. Students may concentrate in one genre or elect to work in several, for a total of 12 to 15 credit hours. MFA candidates must register for workshops on a Pass/Fail basis.

Graduate Literature Courses: LIT 500 & above 12 credit hours)

Graduate literature courses are selected from the wide range of courses offered through the Department of Literature.

Art of Literary Journalism: LIT 710 (3 credit hours)

Art of Literary Journalism offers practical instruction in the skills of reviewing, interviewing, and feature writing.

Seminar on Translation: LIT 705 (3 credit hours)

Seminar on Translation introduces students to the international community of writers by providing approaches to, and models for, the translation of literary works.

Graduate Internships or Teaching Composition: LIT 691/692 OR LIT 730/731 (3 or 6 credit hours)

Graduate internships provide MFA students with opportunities to gain practical experience in such fields as editing, publishing and arts administration. A number of our studetns have interned, for instance, at the Writers Center (Bethesda, MD), the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Library of Congress, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Our students have served as editors of numerous publications and association newsletters.

In place of an internship, students may choose to take LIT 730, Teaching Composition Seminar, which offers an introduction to the fields of rhetoric and composition studies, as well as prparation for teaching academic writing. After completing LIT 730, students may additionally take LIT 731, Internship in Teaching Composition and/or LIT 691, Internship in the Writing Center.

Students who wish to pursue both an internship and Teaching Composition may do so by using their graduate-level electives.

Masters Thesis Seminar: LIT 797 (3 to 6 credit hours )

Masters Thesis Seminar provides the graduate student sufficient time to complete the book-length manuscript that will serve as his or her MFA thesis. This is done in consultation with the student's thesis committee.
