Visiting Writers Series Welcomes Paul Guest

Photo: Starr Thomison

The Visiting Writers Series welcomes award-winning poet Paul Guest to American University at 8 p.m. on October 7 in the Butler Boardroom.

Winner of a 2007 Whiting Writers Award, Guest has composed three collections of poetry, most recently My Index of Slightly Horrifying Knowledge. Guest's work has been included in Slate, the Iowa Review, Mid-American Review, and many other publications. Mary Karr of the Washington Post calls Guest's work "both agonizing and funny." She says, "Guest's humor often disarms me before he ambushes me with longing."

A biking accident at the age of 12 permanently paralyzed Guest, who is now working on a memoir, entitled One More Theory of Happiness, and plans to publish it around May 2010. He teaches at the University of West Georgia and currently lives in Atlanta.

The Visiting Writers Series provides a free venue for both established and up-and-coming writers to recite their work to the public. Past authors include Azar Nafisi, Amy Bloom, Grace Paley, Alice McDermott, and many others.
