The Writing Proficiency Exam is only for students who have transferred in six credits of writing / composition from another college or university. The exam is offered at least once each semester. Please refer to the University Calendar for the dates.

The next exam is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Beeghly 1.

You do not need to register for the exam in advance; however, you will need to have a photo ID with you at the exam.

See WPE practice exam.

The Writing Proficiency Exam will require you to construct an essay in response to a reading, and each administration will offer a choice of readings and questions. Be sure to check here for the exam-specific readings, which will be available about one month prior to the exam (the readings will also be available on the Department of Literature's information rack on the second floor of Battelle-Tompkins).  Please note that readings will change for each exam administration. Copies of the readings will also be available on the day of the exam.

For questions concerning the Writing Proficiency Exam, please contact the Department of Literature at 202-885-2971 or lit@american.edu.
