Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Here are a few of the many interesting developments in the department:
- We welcome Dr. Michael Robinson, who joins the department this fall from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Robinson has a PhD in applied mathematics from Cornell University and studies topological signal processing, among other things.
- We welcome Dr. Donna Dietz, who joins the department this fall from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Dietz has a PhD in mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and has experience teaching mathematics, computer science, scientific computation, and statistics.
- We welcome the following instructors to our department: Michelle Burke, Erin Koch, and Vanessa Little.
- Enrollments and numbers of undergraduate majors and minors in the department have been steadily increasing. We now offer two new BS degree programs, a BS in mathematics and economics and a BS in computational science, developed jointly with the Department of Computer Science.
- This summer we welcomed our fourth class of students to our Math for America program. This program, in conjunction with the School of Education, Teaching, and Health and the Carnegie Institution, trains outstanding mathematics graduates from around the country to teach in the DC schools.
- We offer a new two-course sequence this spring and next fall: Biostatistics (Stat 320), and Topics in Advanced Biostatistics (Stat 517). Stat 320 examines how basic and advanced statistical methods are utilized within the fields of biology, medicine, and public health. Stat 517 provides introduction to the contemporary methodologies used to solve problems in the four major areas of modern-day biomedical science: clinical trials, epidemiology, survival analysis, and bioinformatics. All interested students and working professionals from the Washington DC area, looking to complete their degree or to enroll in a certificate program, are welcome — see Biostatistics Poster.
- Our statistical consulting lab is in its fourth year of service to AU graduate students and faculty who need statistical help with their research.
