AU’S Campus Hosts Special Hometown Guests

By Kerry O’Leary

Abe, Clawed, and Teddy are gearing up for AU Night at Nationals Park on Friday, August 30.

A very important piece of AU memorabilia made its way through campus with the help of a few well-known, oversized D.C. figureheads. Abe and Teddy, two of the Washington Nationals’ eight-foot-tall famous racing presidents, along with AU’s mascot, Clawed, hit campus running last week in preparation for the university’s upcoming “night out” at the ballparkan evening full of Nats baseball and WONK fun.

The Nationals' film crew and several staff from University Communications and Marketing spent a day with the three characters shooting video for the event’s post-game celebration. Students were actors for a day, and social media giveaways generated buzz about the Aug. 30 event.

The second annual AU Night at Nationals Park brings the university community together for night at D.C.’s baseball stadium, culminating a two-season-long partnership between AU and the Washington Nationals. Highlights of the event include: a pre-game alumni picnic , t-shirt giveaway to the first 20,000 fans, and a commemorative first pitch from a member of the AU family. The first pitch will be thrown prior to game's 7:05 p.m. start time.

Tossing that pitch will be AU’s very own D.C. WONK, WAMU’s Kojo Nnamdi. This year, Nnamdi, who has been providing his special blend of engaging and insightful interviews to our area for four decades, celebrates his 15th year with WAMU.

“D.C. is at the center of culture, entertainment, and politicsand now baseballthanks to the Nationals,” says Nnamdi. “It’s also at the center of my life. I hope to see many of our AU family at the game."

AU pride has been a part of Nats Park since the 2012 season, and includes season-long WONK pride such as: a pre-game TV spot on the scoreboard, environmental graphic advertising throughout the park, and in-game interactive WONK challenges with AU faculty. Tickets for AU Night at Nationals Park can be purchased by going to Select the Aug. 30 game, and enter discount code WONK when prompted.

Did Abe, Teddy, and Clawed fulfill their special mission on campus? Stick around after the Aug. 30 game to find out.
