Two New Arts Management Certificates Offered

By Abbey Becker

Arts Management certificates

Beginning in Fall 2012, the Department of Performing Arts will offer a graduate certificate in technology in arts management and a joint certificate with the School of International Service in international arts management.

The certificate in technology in arts management will teach arts managers how to use technology to improve marketing and fundraising efforts. Coursework will include technology and marketing in the arts, technology and fundraising, and analytics so that students can succeed in an arts environment where technology is becoming more commonplace every day. The program requires 15 hours of approved graduate-level coursework; up to 9 credits of that work can be transferred to a master’s degree program.

The graduate certificate in international arts management prepares arts managers who want to work in the international arts community. The certificate will provide innovative education and training in the skills needed to be involved in international cultural projects or in projects with cross-cultural or transnational components. Students will be prepared to work in international organizations, nonprofit agencies, and for corporate and government employers. The program requires 18 hours of approved graduate-level coursework, and up to 12 credits can be transferred to a master’s degree program.

“If you’re interested in cultural diplomacy, working in the arts across international boundaries, how global trends affect local arts organizations, or cross-cultural management or policy, this is the degree for you,” says Sherburne Laughlin, director of the Arts Management Program.
