Audio Technology Master's Program

Admission to the Program

University requirements for admission include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; 3.0 GPA in last 60 hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate work; and for international students whose first language is not English, a TOEFL score of 600 (or 100 on the internet based test), a minimum score of 68 on the Pearson Test of English, or a minimum IELTS score of 7.

In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements for graduate study, applicants to the master’s program need to have a grade point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in the undergraduate major, a portfolio, and two letters of academic reference are required.

The ATEC program receives a variety of portfolio materials from prospective students. Some do audio production work, and submit final mixes, others do sound design for film and submit video content, and still others work on audio processing software and submit original software and source code. Some applicants have a mixture of these types of materials. Whatever your background, please put together three examples of what you believe to be your best work. Also include a half page PDF document containing descriptions of the three projects you are submitting. You may also submit supplementary material, such as DAW session files or audio synthesis patches/programs. Please email your materials to Mark Cugini <cugini@american.edu>, who will make your work available to all ATEC faculty for review.

Part-time as well as full-time students are welcome in the program.
