Annual McDowell Conference on Philosophy and Social Policy
Hosted each November by the Department of Philosophy and Religion, the conference features presentations by distinguished guests and members of our department, and attracts students, faculty, and members of the Washington, D.C. community. Discussions are spirited and informative.

Bishop Hurst Philosophy Lecture Series
The Bishop John Fletcher Hurst Philosophy Lecture was initiated by the Department of Philosophy and Religion and named for the founder of American University, who was himself a philosopher. Offered annually in the spring, it brings to the American University campus some of the most distinguished thinkers from this country and abroad.

Philosophy Matters Speakers Series
The department hosts a number of lectures by both department faculty and outside speakers each academic year as part of our Philosophy Matters Speakers Series.

Workshops
Throughout the year, the department offers workshops, such as workshops on writing papers in philosophy, intended to help students with common problems and concerns.
