Psychology | Master's Program

Admission to the Program

University requirements for admission include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; 3.0 GPA in last 60 hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate work; scores from the GRE General Aptitude test; and for international students whose first language is not English, a TOEFL score of 600 (or 100 on the internet based test), a minimum score of 68 on the Pearson Test of English, or a minimum IELTS score of 7.

In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements for graduate study, applicants must earn a satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General examination. Admission is based on academic record, test scores, and two letters of recommendation.

The application deadline is March 1. Fall admission only.

Completion of the degree does not necessarily lead to admission to the PhD program; students who wish to be considered for the PhD program must apply. Applicants with a BA who wish to obtain a PhD in Psychology from American University should apply directly to the PhD program. If they do not have an MA, students will earn one as part of the PhD program. See the description of the PhD program for more information.

Up to 6 credit hours of graduate course work in psychology from another university or up to 12 credit hours of graduate course credit taken at American University may be transferred, provided that these credits were not counted toward another degree. These transfers of credit are subject to approval by the director of the master's program.
