In The Interpretation of Cultures, anthropologist Clifford Geertz wrote that it is "in the cultural particularities of people-- in their oddities-- that some of the most instructive revelations of what it is to be generically human are to be found." The same could well be said of the cultural differences among education and schooling systems across the globe. How any given society decides to educate its members-- formally and informally, from cradle to grave-- reveals much about the kinds of social norms, values, and beliefs that shape individuals' and groups' life trajectories and opportunities. Who has access to schools, and what are the outcomes for disadvantaged members of society? What role does education play in fostering or hindering individual and social change? What are the cultural assumptions and norms underpinning development assistance or exchange and study abroad programs? What role does education play in global health crises and challenges, or in emergencies, conflict and post-conflict settings? How are controversial histories taught?

If you are inspired by these kinds of questions, you may well be interested in American University's International Training and Education Program (ITEP). The 36-credit Master of Arts degree in ITEP will allow you to concentrate your study in international development education, global health, international exchange and study abroad, or global education. You will learn how education systems work around the globe and gain knowledge, skills, and experiences in international development and education policies. You can develop expertise in cross-cultural exchange programming or acquire skills in training and program design and evaluation methods. When you graduate, you will seek employment with organizations and agencies such as the World Bank, the Peace Corps, the Department of State and USAID, domestic and overseas universities, K-12 schools, or a variety of other governmental or international non-governmental organizations and agencies.

In ITEP, we bring together committed faculty, staff and students whose academic backgrounds and international experiences are rich and varied; this mix informs the teaching and learning in the program. We also work to ensure that all who join the program can take full advantage of the culturally and educationally enriching resources of Washington, D.C., one of the great global cities.
