SERVE THE FUTURE, DEADLINE MAY 1, 2006 "It’s a poor sort of memory that only works backwards" wrote Lewis Carroll, and at Kianda Bell’s memorial service no idea was more repeated than the wish “to pass it on”–to pass on to others what Kianda had meant to us. We now have one way that you can act to do this. A committee has been at work here at AU to devise a way to make Kianda’s excellence a permanent feature of our life here. Through the good offices of Dean Kay Mussell, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, we have the opportunity to establish a fellowship in Kianda’s name to be awarded yearly to a graduate student in sociology to support thesis research. This fellowship would offer $2000 in support and would be available to any student enrolled in the graduate program in sociology and approaching the writing of the master’s thesis or project. Dean Mussell has understood how much Kianda Bell meant to this Department and agreed to donate $1000 yearly for this award. We need to raise $1500 this year to start this fund and match the Dean’s generous offer. Please help. Contributions in any amount, preferably by check, should be given to Sandra Linden, Administrator of the Department of Sociology, in Batelle-Tompkins T-21. Checks should be made payable to “American University” with the memo line on the check specifying “Kianda Bell Memorial.” This is an opportunity for all of us to stand by our shared conviction that Kianda Bell was an extraordinary person, a person who related to others in terms of the good he saw inside them, a good he continued to see even when their outer actions did not express it. Please give whatever you can. Your name will be permanently linked with Kianda’s and listed on the plaque given to the first award recipient.
