TESOL | Peace Corps Volunteers

Katie Leitch

"In April of 2009, I decided to apply to two things: The Peace Corps and the Summer TESOL Institute here at American University. Like a lot of people, the Peace Corps was something that had been in the back of my mind for a long time. But I knew I owed it to future students to put in some work before getting back into the classroom -- I had a year's worth of EFL teaching under my belt, but very little training.

Completing 15 credits of coursework in one summer wasn't easy, but the payoff was huge.  I began teaching adults in the DC area and almost right away I could see so many avenues for improvement and exploration in the classroom that I hadn't seen before.  I knew that if I did the Master's International Program, the remaining classes would prepare me that much more for my overseas service.  I decided to go for it.

I'm so glad I did.  My husband and I will be leaving for Mongolia in June.  I'm confident that my time in the TESOL Program at AU has made me into a better, more capable and more flexible instructor, and I can't wait to meet my new coteachers and learners."
