This course provides students with an understanding of cultural identity formation as it pertains to the Italian American experience. The course work utilizes fictional, non-fictional, and visual texts to describe migration and change from the perspective of Italian American and native Italian authors. Key topics to be studied include: transcontinental voyage, labor exploitation, discriminatory practices, political emergence, gender roles, religious affiliation, crime (and the mafia) as stereotype, family bonds, and food as a cultural heritage.
