LFS | Studying Arabic at All Levels with AU Abroad

AU Abroad offers the below programs for Arabic students at AU.  These programs are designed for Arabic language acquisition at all levels, and have no language prerequisite.

 

Egypt: American University in Cairo

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Standard and accelerated MSA courses available at all levels; Arabic literature and media courses available for advanced students
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Yes
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full year, Summer
Program Structure: Students directly enroll in American University in Cairo as an international student. Students can choose from a wide range of content courses in English and a wide variety of Arabic language courses. While the university accepts a large number (300-400) of international students who speak mostly English, the majority of the degree-seeking student population (3500 students) is from Egypt (70%). AUC also offers an entire semester of intensive language study through the Arabic Language Institute (ALI) for students completely focused on learning Arabic (earlier application deadline).

Egypt: AMIDEAST in Cairo

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Required (4 credits) - available at all levels
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (3 credits)
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full year
Program Structure: This program is offered in coordination with AMIDEAST. Students take courses with other U.S. students at AMIDEAST's center in the Dokki neighborhood of Cairo. In addition to language courses, students take content courses in English in Middle East / North African Studies and Egyptology. AMIDEAST also coordinates student housing (furnished, shared apartments), excursions, and cultural activities as part of the program.

Morocco: AMIDEAST in Rabat

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Required (4 credits) - available at all levels
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (3 credits)
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full year
Program Structure: This program is offered in coordination with AMIDEAST.  Students take courses with other U.S. students.  Language courses take place at AMIDEAST's language center in Rabat and the content courses in English take place at Mohammed V University.  Content courses are focused on Moroccan history, politics, and culture.  AMIDEAST also coordinates student housing (homestay or student dormitory), excursions, and cultural activities as part of the program. Advanced French language courses are also available.

Jordan: AMIDEAST in Amman

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Required (Fall, Spring = 4 credits :: Summer = 4 credits per session) - available at all levels
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (Fall, Spring: 3 credits :: Summer: 1 credit per session)
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full year, Summer
Program Structure: This program is offered in coordination with AMIDEAST and the Qasid Institute.  Students take courses with other U.S. students at AMIDEAST's center in Amman.  In addition to language courses, students take content courses in English in Middle East / North African Studies during the Fall and Spring.  During the summer, students only study Arabic.  AMIDEAST also coordinates student housing (homestay or shared apartments), excursions, and cultural activities as part of the program.

Jordan: University of Jordan (CIEE) - Language + Culture Program

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Required (6 credits) - available at all levels
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (3 credits)
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full year
Program Structure: Students take courses with other U.S. students.  Students choose 2 content courses which are instructed in English and include topics on Jordanian life and culture, and issues confronting the Middle East region today.  CIEE also coordinates student housing (homestay or student apartment), excursions, internships, and cultural activities as part of the program.

Intensive Summer Arabic Program

The Department of Language and Foreign Studies at American University is offering three levels of Modern Standard Arabic during the Summer 2012 session.  Over the course of twelve weeks, students of Intensive Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced Arabic will complete a full year (two semesters) of language study.  Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced Arabic courses will meet three evenings per week for the duration of the summer session.  A Levantine Colloquial Arabic class is also offered separately.
