LFS | Studying Arabic at Intermediate Levels With AU Abroad

AU Abroad offers the below programs for Intermediate and Advanced Arabic students at AU.  These programs have prerequisites.

 

Egypt: Summer Intensive Arabic Program in Alexandria

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Required (5 credits)
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (3 credits)
Terms Available: Summer (8 weeks) :: late May - mid July :: offered most summers
Prerequisites: Level I: ARAB 103 :: Level 2: ARAB 203 (or equivalent)
Program Structure: Program offered in coordination with the University of Alexandria.  This program is designed to allow intermediate and lower advanced level Arabic students to complete one year of Arabic language courses (2 classes) in just eight weeks.  Students complete 24 hours of instruction per week including 4 hours of Media Arabic and 4 hours with an Egyptian language partner.

Jordan: University of Jordan (CIEE) - Advanced Arabic Language Program

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Required (6 credits) - available at all levels
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (4 credits)
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full year
Prerequisites: ARAB 303 (or equivalent)
Program Structure: All coursework and programming is conducted in Arabic.  Students commit to a language pledge as a part of this program.  Students enroll in courses with other students on the program to complete 4 credits of Advanced Modern Standard Arabic, 5 credits of Advanced Topics in Arabic Conversation, and two additional courses (3 credits each) in Arab Media, Literature, Poetry, or Business Communication.  CIEE organizes housing in homestays, as well as cultural activities and excursions.

Jordan: Intensive Arabic in Irbid (CET)

Modern Standard Arabic courses available: Required (Fall, Spring = 6 credits :: Summer = 5 credits)
Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (Fall, Spring = 4 credits :: Summer = 3 credits)
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full Year, Summer (8 weeks)

Intensive Arabic Language and Cultural Studies Program (Two Levels)
Prerequisites: ARAB 202 (or equivalent)
Program Structure: These programs are offered in coordination with CET and hosted by Yarmouk University.  Students take courses with other U.S. students.  Students choose 2 content courses which are instructed in either English or Arabic (based on students' language level) and include topics on contemporary Jordanian life and culture, media Arabic, translation, etc.  CET also coordinates student housing in apartments with Jordanian students, language partners, excursions, and cultural activities as part of the program.  Students commit to a language pledge as part of this program.

Summer Intensive Arabic
Prerequisites:
ARAB 103 (or equivalent)
Program Structure:
All coursework and most programming is conducted in Arabic.  Students commit to a language pledge throughout the program.  Students undertake intensive study of the Arabic language with small classes and Jordanian language partners.  CET organizes housing in shared apartments with Jordanian students, cultural activities, and excursions.

Syria: University of Aleppo (CET)

Colloquial Arabic courses available: Required (Fall, Spring = 3 credits :: Summer = 3 credits)
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Full year, Summer (8 weeks)

Intensive Arabic Language and Cultural Studies Program (Two Levels)
Prerequisites: ARAB 202 (or equivalent)
Program Structure: These programs are offered in coordination with CET and hosted by the University of Aleppo.  Students take courses with other U.S. students.  Students choose 2 content courses which are instructed in either English or Arabic (based on students' language level) and include topics on contemporary Syrian life and culture, and issues facing the Middle East region today.  CET also coordinates housing on campus, excursions, and cultural activities as part of the program.  Please note: Special scholarships are available for this program.

Program Structure: Students participate in Middlebury College's study abroad program based at the TAFL Center at the University of Alexandria.  All coursework and programming is conducted in Arabic.  Students commit to a language pledge throughout the program.  Students enroll in courses with other students on the program to complete 4 credits of Modern Standard Arabic, 4 credits of Colloquial Arabic, 2 credits of Media Arabic, 2 credits of translation and one independent study content course taught in Arabic each semester.  Middlebury organizes homestays or Egyptian student dormitories.  Cultural activities and excursions are also provided.

Intensive Summer Arabic Program

The Department of Language and Foreign Studies at American University is offering three levels of Modern Standard Arabic during the Summer 2012 session.  Over the course of twelve weeks, students of Intensive Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced Arabic will complete a full year (two semesters) of language study.  Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced Arabic courses will meet three evenings per week for the duration of the summer session.  A Levantine Colloquial Arabic class is also offered separately.
