Update for August 2013 Graduates & December 2013/May 2014 Expected Graduates

This is the first in a series of updates and mailings for students expected to graduate in December 2013 and May 2014, and recent August 2013 graduates. Check the myAU.american.edu portal to be sure your correct mailing and email addresses are on file. All mailings and updates will be posted on the commencement website.
This update includes:
AU’s commencement ceremonies will be held May 10 and 11, 2014, in Bender Arena. August and December 2013 graduates and students who are expected to graduate in May 2014 and are declared eligible are invited to participate in the following ceremonies:
Saturday, May 10:
9:00 am School of Communication
1:00 pm Kogod School of Business
4:30 pm School of International Service
Sunday, May 11:
9:00 am School of Public Affairs
1:00 pm College of Arts and Services
Information for August and December 2013 Graduates
Because commencement is only held in May, President Kerwin will host a reception for August and December 2013 graduates on Friday, December 6. Invitations will be mailed in late October. Responses and guest count (four guests max.) are due Monday, December 2. If you have not filled out the Application to Graduate form on the myAU.american.edu portal, contact your academic advisor immediately. If you graduated in August 2013 or have applied to graduate this December and have not received an invitation to the reception by November 8, please contact email@example.com.
Diplomas are mailed on a rolling basis after grades have been recorded and your student record has been audited. December grads’ diplomas will indicate a graduation date of December 19. Most December grads receive diplomas between late January and March.
Information for May 2014 Graduates
If you intend to complete your degree requirements and graduate in May, you must complete the online Application to Graduate form on the myAU.american.edu portal. The application is available now. All students, whether or not you plan to attend commencement, must complete this application on the portal. This form is separate from any clearance paperwork that you fill out for your school or college. If you have any questions, contact your academic advisor.
Submission of the Application to Graduate form triggers a review of your academic record, puts you on track to receive future commencement mailings and updates, and helps to ensure that your name is listed in the printed commencement program.
Upcoming Mailings and Updates
In mid-November, the Commencement Guide for Graduates and Guests will be mailed to the permanent home addresses of August graduates, December applicants, and students expected to graduate in May. The guide includes general information about preparing for commencement, cap and gown rentals, commencement weekend activities, etc. A second electronic update will be sent to AU email addresses in mid-December. Mailings and updates are also posted on the commencement website.
