Originally from Massachusetts, I come from a family where graduating with a high school diploma is an accomplishment and attending college seemed unlikely. I did not want to waste one second of my time here in D.C., because I recognized how lucky I was to be here. I was able to work and learn alongside some of the brightest people in the country in places like Capitol Hill, nonprofits, and public relations agencies, all the way to my classes at AU taught by professors who have truly inspired and impacted my life.
The most important thing I have learned at AU can be summed up in a quote from the Five People You Meet in Heaven, "There are no random acts, we are all connected, you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind."
I was able to realize that I wouldn't be reaching this milestone if it weren't for the support that I found in friends, mentors, and faculty at American University and most importantly my family. I would not be here if each of their actions didn't inspire me to want to try harder and achieve more.
Our actions, though unknowingly, could significantly change the lives of anyone we come in contact with. Take moments in life to reflect and don't get caught up on the materialistic success or reaching a title as fast as possible. At the end of the day true power comes from the impact you have through the connections you are able to make.
