The Biology of Birds
This course introduces the basic biology and study of birds. It covers aspects of the diversity, evolutionary history, structure and function, and behavior of this conspicuous vertebrate group. The course also teaches the fundamentals of bird identification, concentrating on the common birds of Eastern United States. Meets with BIO-496 001.

Microbiology
Fundamental principles of the evolution and behavior of microbes with an emphasis on bacteria. Describes how recent results from large-scale DNA sequencing studies have impacted the field of microbiology. Emphasis on the role of microbes in human disease. Other topics include the use of microbes in industrial applications and the impact of microbes on the environment.

Endocrinology
This course covers the fundamentals of hormone signaling systems; organization and action of hormone synthesis, secretion, and response; and the molecular, cellular, and physiological effects of hormones in health and disease. Specific topics include the hormonal regulation of reproductive physiology, growth, homeostasis, metabolism and development; including defects in hormonal regulation underlying clinically important syndromes.
