Production Practicum (1-3)

Cinematography and Lighting

Camera technique and lighting are among the key determinants of quality, mood, and style in film and video production. Part theoretical discussion and part hands-on workshop, this course explores these specialized crafts in a dramatic as well as documentary context through field trips, demonstrations, and the screening of classic works. Emphasis is placed on the artistic role of the cinematographer and the similarities and differences between traditional film and modern digital imaging media. Prerequisite: COMM-634. Meets with COMM-438 001.

Production Practicum (1-3)

Basic Media Production

This course presents basic lessons in visual concept development and design, and allows students outside of communication or film and media arts to develop important practical visual communication skills in web site development, photography, and film and video production. This course teaches students experientially as they create and produce projects, as well as theoretically, as they learn how to analyze, critique, and effectively create these various media. By the end of this course, students have an online portfolio to display these skills as well as market themselves online as communication professionals. Open only to students in the MA in International Media program with permission of school.

Creative Sound Techniques

Though there are hands-on requirements, this course is designed for the creative team of narrative or documentary projects that utilize substantial location recording elements, rather than those interested in becoming sound professionals. The course guides students through the typical problems faced with sound issues in the pre-production, principle photography, and post-production phases. Prerequisite: permission of school. Meets with COMM-438 004/005.
