Offered in conjunction with HNRS-302 003H Mexico 2013: Democracy, Development, and the Challenge of Violence, students travel during Spring Break to study firsthand some of the vital issues that shape society and politics in Mexico, including immigration, human rights, the interaction between indigenous and state positive law systems, democratization at the national and subnational levels, and rural economic development and its challenges. Students have the opportunity to meet some of the people whose contributions make Oaxaca distinctive, including local officials, scholars, and indigenous community leaders and to explore Zapotec ruins, one of Mexico's most beautiful museums, and the state's vibrant range of cultures. They also have the chance to enjoy the beautiful Sierra Madre Mountains and the many splendors of Oaxaca's capital city, which has all the comforts of a modern metropolis as well as unique architectural, culinary, and other charms not found anywhere else. Prerequisite: permission of the University Honors Program. Students enrolled HNRS-302 003H have priority but other University Honors students will be able to register if space is available.
