Seminar on Security Policy

This course provides students with a foundation for understanding and analyzing contemporary security issues related to political violence domestically and internationally. These include, for example, threats related to jihadist violence, domestic terrorism, the ongoing insurgency in Afghanistan, WMD acquisition by non-state entities, transnational organized criminal enterprises, the growing debate over a right to protect doctrine, and challenges relating to ungoverned or poorly governed spaces. Each class includes a lecture delivered by a policymaker or practitioner from the U.S. government, followed by a discussion with students moderated by the professor. Students have an opportunity to engage with individuals with expertise on a diverse range of security challenges. These speakers have experience seeking as well as implementing policy solutions. In addition to providing valuable insights from an intellectual perspective, this seminar enables students to expand their professional networks by connecting with individuals working in various fields of interest.
