Psychology of Drug Dependence

This course is designed to familiarize students with the major theories, models, and methods currently employed in the psychological study and treatment of human drug dependence. The course begins with a primer on basic drug dependence concepts as well as background reading on drug actions and drug effects. The course then goes on to discuss how theories/models guide research and treatment of drug dependence. Students discuss the study of drug dependence at various levels of analysis, and from a number of different scientific perspectives. Students discuss the complex interactions of biological, behavioral, cognitive, socio-cultural factors that lead to dependence. Throughout the course, students address each topic through a careful review of the scientific literature.
