Globalization and Education (3) In this course students are introduced to the key sociological themes and theories that help frame our understanding of globalization and its impact on education around the world. After tracing globalization's history and contemporary trends, the course turns to detailing how education, broadly conceived, is affected by globalization. This includes a critical examination of multi-lateral agencies such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the United Nations/UNESCO; transformations in patterns of student mobility and migration; curricular changes and alignment such as the Bologna Process in the European Union; the emergence of global norms for education; and the use of new media and digital platforms for global educational exchange and higher education. The course uses sociological theories and frameworks to interrogate these trends and offer explanatory frameworks. Meets with SOCY-396 001.

AU Experience I Peer Leadership (3) This integrative experience course focuses on student development and leadership theories while drawing on students' own insights as emerging leaders. Students develop relevant skills to communicate and effectively lead diverse groups of students including interpersonal communication, group facilitation, conflict resolution, public speaking, and teambuilding as they serve as peer leaders in the AU Experience I course. Using these skills, students learn to face classroom challenges, especially as they relate to the transition of incoming undergraduate students. Students use leadership skills to create and deliver seminars, workshops, training sessions, and small discussions, while also preparing to take on leadership role on campus and in their communities. The course provides a forum for students to develop, improve, and assess their own their own peer mentorship and leadership experiences. Permission: Program director.

Educational Policy in the Global South (3) This course is an in-depth analysis of educational policies in the Global South, drawing on theories of comparative and international education to investigate and compare the creation, dissemination, innovation, and evaluation of educational policies and systems worldwide. The course first explores the theoretical origins of educational policies in the twentieth century and then inquires as to the complications the twenty-first century has rendered on these long-standing structures. It makes use of multiple modalities to deepen the analysis and to construct students' understandings of these dilemmas and questions.

Special Tuition Rate. Off-Campus: McKinley Tech High School. Becoming a Teacher Leader in Science (3) This course focuses on teacher leader development through the lens of identifying and communicating feedback and leading professional development within the school and/or district community. Students begin the course by identifying and analyzing best teaching practices through various teacher evaluation rubrics including DC Public School's IMPACT system. They assess various teaching practices through video and rubric analysis and after self-evaluating areas of strength and growth, engage in a process of peer evaluation using a feedback protocol to refine their leadership knowledge and skills. After practicing coaching conversations and feedback cycles, they move towards facilitating adult learning and identify a school-based problem or need to be addressed through professional development. Students collect and analyze data around this need or problem and work to propose a solution and lead a professional development with their school or district. Open only to students in the Lab2Class Program.
