The course discusses guiding principles of teaching English to pre- and low-literate adults through an assets lens which seeks to recognize and use the tremendous resources they bring to the learning process. Concrete examples are presented to immediately see these principles put into practice, with a particular focus on whole-part-whole literacy instruction. Participants consider how to integrate learners' home languages in developing basic print concepts and ways of making instruction multi-modal, kinesthetic, aesthetic, student-centered, and culturally relevant.
