Geology of the Turkana Basin (3)
This course, offered as a part of the AU Abroad program in
Turkana Basin, Kenya introduces current perspectives on the
origins and evolution of the region. Students learn to apply
fundamental geological concepts to sediments and rock units to
provide a foundation for the chronology and context for events
in human evolution.

Ecology of the Lake Turkana Basin (3)
This course, offered as a part of the AU Abroad program in
Turkana Basin, Kenya, is an in-depth study of basic field
ecology in the context of the modern East African Lake Turkana
environment. Including a mixture of fieldwork, lectures,
seminars, and readings, students identify common invasive and
endemic plant species as well as recognize important
evolutionary and ecological patterns and issues.

Environments, Ecosystems and Evolution (3)
This course, offered as a part of the AU Abroad Nairobi program,
takes place at the Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) and offers an
introduction to the ways scientists use fossil and
archaeological records to learn about past changes in Earth's
climates, environments, and animal communities, and how
humanity's ancestors responded.

Ecological Applications (3)
A key requirement in addressing many of today's environmental
issues is a sound understanding of ecological principles. This
course provides a survey of these principles, including species
interactions, population genetics and demographics, community
structure and organization, and ecosystem function, and applies
these principles to real-world problems. The course emphasizes
quantitative approaches and skills acquisition, and employs a
range of teaching methodologies including lectures, discussions,
and hand-on activities both in and outside of the classroom.

Environmental Geographic Information Systems (3)
The study of the environment is inherently spatial and global in
nature. One way to view and analyze data in a spatial, or
geographic, context is with geographic information systems
(GIS). GIS hardware and software are commonly used to map and
analyze the drivers and implications of deforestation,
urbanization, air/water/soil pollution, environmental health
disparities, and myriad other spatial-environmental phenomena.
In this course students enhance their theoretical and technical
knowledge of GIS (primarily using ArcGIS) through analysis and
cartographic representation of socio-environmental issues.
Prerequisite: CSC-310 or mathematics or statistics course. Meets
with ENVS-696 001.
