Quantitative Methods for Climate Change and Particulate Pollution (3) This course teaches students the core science of climate change including the major scientific uncertainty - climate sensitivity. The course includes an emphasis on long-term trends vs short-term fluctuations, time series analyses and examples showing how climate change denial typically works. Students are introduced to existing voluntary carbon markets, REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) and the social cost of carbon. The course also covers air pollution and health effects of particulate pollution. Students learn how to apply Excel models of health effects and economic damages from particulate pollution. Meets with ENVS-696 001.

Instructional Method: Online. The Science of Science Writing (3) Science and medical writing requires grounding in a wide variety of disciplines and the ability to communicate with and through others. This course covers the fundamentals of science writing and communication, with an emphasis on overcoming the obstacles of effective science communication, as well as topics such as communicating risk, tailoring messages for children and other special populations, being persuasive, and constructing maximally effective messages for large lay audiences. Students gain an appreciation of how we generate, interpret, and work on information, as well as build skills necessary for successful careers in science/medical communication. Grading: A-F only. Meets with ENVS-696 002 and PSM-601 001.
