Coding Theory Data that is about to transmit from one location to another is encoded so that errors in transmission are detected and corrected. Standard encoding uses strings of 0 and 1 (binary codes), or more generally a string of elements from a finite field. This course studies the basics of the encoding and decoding techniques by focusing on the existence and construction of various codes such as linear codes, Hamming codes, Golay Codes, Reed-Muller codes, and Solomon-Reed codes. Various bounds on their efficiency are studied leading to special codes such as perfect and MDS codes. The course is a nice blend of linear algebra over finite fields with combinatorics and probability. Prerequisite: MATH-310.
