Popular Culture and Arab Societies (3) This course focuses on the many ways in which popular culture and performance, particularly music, film and theater, serve as tools for negotiating power and resistance in Arab societies. As such it explores the interconnections between popular culture and gender, race, ethnicity, religion, politics, class, and identity.

Transnational Insecurities: Capitalism(s), Climate Change, and Inequality (3) Globalization has pushed many fragilities into focus in the contemporary era. People are feeling increasingly insecure in the face of rapidly-changing social, political, and economic realities. While transnationalism has meant increased standards of living for many, it has also come with, to varying degrees, increased income inequality, declining environmental standards, and social and political insecurities. This course examines a number of the challenges of the present moment and the activist responses to them, specifically examining labor issues in China, mushroom farming in Japan, global climate change, and political organizing in Egypt and New York, among others.
