Washington, DC Architecture (3) Why is the White House white? Why is Jefferson honored with a dome and Washington an obelisk? Washington DC is rich in architectural treasures, some of which revive historical styles, others showing daring innovation. This course analyzes the city's buildings within a broad context of Western architectural history. Alternate classes take place on site, providing unique opportunities to view buildings up close, analyze their design and construction, and experience how well they function. In-class lectures and discussions explore the historical framework and political motivation behind architectural choices. Students become familiar with historical styles, the meaning of materials, architectural design, engineering innovations and the complex relationship between form and function.
