on-line course examines
the history of slavery
in the District of Columbia
since the city’s
inception in 1790 to Emancipation
Day in 1863. It looks
at the legal and social
development of slavery
in the District, examines
the presence and influence
of D.C.’s free blacks
on slavery and the slave
trade within the city,
and identifies the major
proslavery and anti-slavery
forces that impacted the
slave trade within the
Capitol. The course also
examines the actions and
role of Congress, and
highlights the changing
historiographical interpretations
of slavery and the slave
trade in Washington, D.C.
