Welcome to Government 532!   This is the home page for Government 532: Politics of East-Central Europe.  All students should check this page regularly for updates, assignments, and tips on how to do better on papers and exams.

Syllabus  Consider this web syllabus your "real" syllabus.  It has all the readings and web assignments.  Make sure to look over it and the course requirements carefully.
Course Requirements  Check here for a list of required books as well as more information about course assignments and expectations.
Office Hours: Tentatively scheduled for 2-5pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.   I am also happy to meet students by appointment in my Ward 221 office.  If I'm not there, you may also find me at the Wagshall's in the lobby of the Ward building (feel free to come sit and chat).  I am also glad to answer any questions through email at dlublin@american.edu or at (202) 885-2913.
Class Listserv: GOVT5321@american.edu  If you send email to this address, everyone is the class will receive a copy at their official AU address.  Feel free to use it to communicate with classmates, share advice on assignments, or to ask general questions (often your classmates will know the answer even if I don't).
Essay Assignments  Students will write short 2-3 page essays for 8 of the 11 classes based on the reading assignment for that class.   See the essay topics page for a list of essay topics for each week and see the course requirements for more details on this assignment.  Students must attend any class for which they write a paper and late papers are not accepted.

Books and Web Sites on East-Central Europe  I have compiled a sampling of books and sites that you may find useful when doing your own research.
Tips on Citations, Writing, and Using Spreadsheets
Citations: a short guide for the perplexed.  I encourage students to use the parenthetical citation format in their short papers because it is easy and quick to use (and is also the standard in political science).
Writing Tips: make your paper more professional (and possibly get a better grade?)
Using Excel and Quattro Pro  Unfamiliar with spreadsheets?   Check out this page.
