Opinion Journals
The New Republic This neoliberal journal is solidly pro-Israel and pro-Al Gore. Recent scandals involving false reporting have tarnished its already faltering image. As one friend quipped, "I'd have no problem with The New Republic if they would just put 'a work of fiction' on the cover of every issue."
The Nation Left-wing weekly. If you like Jesse Jackson, are committed to left-wing orthodoxy, and think President Clinton has sold out progressives (in addition to everyone else), this is the magazine for you.
The Weekly Standard Relatively new hot conservative journal. Taken some flack from the hard right for being too liberal in some of its more practical stances. Moderates and liberals would be perplexed as to why.
Slate Michael Kinsley's internet publishing venture with Microsoft. Very hip.
Dissent Edited by Mitchell Cohen and Michael Walzer.
Mother Jones Progressive journal with a nice site. The words "socially responsible" appear a lot in the text.
The American Prospect The publication of practical and pragmatic liberals.
Foreign Policy Serious journal containing articles by heavy hitters.
Campaigns and Elections Trade journal for political practitioners.
The American Spectator Acid conservative commentary.
National Review William F. Buckley's magazine. It is the mother of all conservative opinion magazines but has been eclipsed by the Weekly Standard as the leading opinion-shaping conservative journal.
Politically Incorrect As you might expect, PINC focuses on attacking PC.
Salon Magazine This internet-zine has made its mark following the Clinton scandal. I provided their quote of the day for April 2, 1998: "We've had so many bimbo eruptions; it's like noticing the eleventh pimple on somebody's face" (on why Americans didn't seem to care about former Miss America Elizabeth Ward's claim to have slept with President Clinton). Hey, we all have to have our fifteen minutes ;-)
