Welcome Message

The Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars program is American University's most distinctive Honors community, offering our highest scholarship (full tuition, room, board, books, and fees) to exceptional incoming freshmen committed to excellence, social justice, and active citizenship.

Admission is very competitive and offered exclusively to ambitious undergraduates seeking creative solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.  Diverse in their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, age, ability, religion, and sexual orientation, scholars are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership potential, and demonstrated community service.

Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars are dedicated to transforming lives and communities from what they are today to what they can be, tomorrow.  Scholars intentionally foster a respectful learning environment in which they come together to share a greater purpose, develop their potential, and contribute to the larger AU community and the world.
