Snakes!
"Don't be afraid ... I promise I won't bite!"

Snakes are not all slimy, nasty, evil things; although many people feel that way.  Snakes help us by catching and eating vermin such as rats.  So, in a way, snakes are very beneficial to human beings.  Snakes are even starting to become a very popular pet!

DID YOU KNOW ...
... that there is no such thing as a vegetarian snake?!?

Snakes are most often predators, meaning that they look to capture other animals, called prey, as their food.  Snakes can kill their prey in one of two ways:

Snakes that are constrictors will squeeze their prey to death, then open wide and swallow the prey whole!

Other snakes that are poisonous will bite their prey and inject it with a fluid called venom, which enters the other animal's bloodstream and causes the animal to die.  Then it's dinner time for the snake!
