Building A Sustainable U

Campus Beautification Day 2012| April 17 (Rain Date April 18)

Registration & Activities | BYOB | Eco-Goats | Project Move Out | @ the Amphitheater | Earth Week

This year Campus Beautification Day (CBD) is being held on April 17th during Earth Week. You can register for CBD at the flag pole area opposite MGC entrance on the Quad starting at 8:00 am on the day of the event. CBD is a university tradition which incorporates campus beautification and sustainability goals. The most important aspect of the day however is building and strengthening the AU community through bringing together staff, faculty, students, and neighbors. CBD features a sustainability theme and our planned activities highlight AU's commitment to greening the campus.

Wear comfortable clothing and we will supply the rest (gloves, water, T-shirt, and team leaders to guide you in participating in the various activity activities). The gardening activities wrap up at noon at the CBD BBQ in the amphitheater. Campus Beautifiers will all be qualified to be entered to win a raffle prize at the BBQ!

Activities @ the Event

You can register on the day of the event to particpate in the activities listed below. Registration tables will be on the quad by the flag pole, Tenley campus, and Brandywine. We also encourage volunteers to tweet throughout the day and connect with your fellow AU peers #AUEarthWeek.

Bring Your Own (reusable water) Bottle!

Tap water is locally sourced, cheaper, and does not produce plastic waste. There is a strong movement on campus to ban bottled water. Bring your own reusable water bottle on Campus Beautification Day and help us reach our Zero Waste goal! Water coolers will be provided on the day of the event at designated sites.

Goats!! Eco-Goats!

Goats are an alternative to herbicides for removing invasive plants. Eco-Goats will be featured on our campus quad and they will help us get rid of our invasive ivy! Come learn more about Eco-Goats and feed the kids on Campus Beautification Day!

Project Move Out

In response to American University's Zero Waste Policy, this year we are putting together a campus-wide collection of lightly used, unwanted items. We will have a Pod on the Quad to take donations for this program on CBD near the registration desk from 8am -12pm. On May 5th in the Tavern, we will facilitate a sale of those items open to the DC community. All proceeds and items remaining after the sale will go to local DC charities.  For more information on how to donate and volunteer, please visit our website: www.american.edu/projectmoveout.
