Explanation of W2C Form
Box a “Tax year/Form Corrected”: This box indicates the tax year being corrected and the form we have corrected.
Box b “Employee’s correct SSN”: This box reflects your correct social security number.
Box c “Corrected SSN and/or name”: This box will be checked if we have corrected your name or social security number.
Box d “Employer’s Federal EIN”: This box reflects American University’s Employer Identification Number.
Box e and f “Employee’s name, address, and zip”: This reflects your name, address and zip. If your name has been corrected this will be in box e.
Box g “Employer’s name, address, and Zip”: This reflects American University’s name, address and zip.
Box h “Employee’s incorrect SSN”: This is the incorrect social security number originally reported.
Box I “Employee’s incorrect name”: This is the incorrect name originally reported.
Note: Each box number has a Previously reported box and a Correct Information box.
Box 1 “Wages, tips, other compensation”: This box is used to correct any Wages, tips or other compensation reported.
Box 2 “Federal Income tax withheld”: This box is used to correct federal income tax withheld.
Box 3 “Social Security wages”: This box is used to correct social security wages.
Box 4 “Social security tax withheld”: This box is used to correct social security tax withheld.
Box 5 “Medicare wages and tips”: This box is used to correct Medicare wages and tips.
Box 6 “Medicare tax withheld”: This box is used to correct Medicare tax withheld.
Box 7 “Social security tips”: American University does not use this box but it is used to correct Social security tips.
Box 8 “Allocated tips”: American University does not use this box but it is used to correct allocated tips.
Box 9 “Advance EIC payment”: American University does not use this box but this box is used to correct Advance EIC payments.
Box 10 “Dependent care benefits”: This box used to correct Dependent care expenses.
Box 11 “Nonqualified plans”: This box is used to correct deferrals and distributions relating to nonqualified plans. This box is not currently used by American University.
Box 12a-d “Codes”: These boxes are used to correct any of the coded items shown on W-2. Examples include taxable cost of group life insurance coverage, 403b retirement contributions, and 457B retirement contributions.
Box 13 “Boxes Reporting Statutory employee, Retirement plan or Third-party sick pay”: Typically the university only checks the retirement plan box when applicable.
Box 14 “Other”: This box is used to report miscellaneous items not required by the IRS. Currently American University does not fill in any information in this box.
Box 15 “State and Employer’s state ID number”: State abbreviation of reported taxable and/or tax withheld. This box completed when corrections are made to your state taxable or tax fields.
Box 16 “State wages, tips, etc.”: This is the box used to correct your state taxable income.
Box 17 “State income tax”: This is the box used to correct your state tax withheld.
Box 18-20 “Locality Correction Information”: These boxes are used to correct any local taxable or tax information. American University does not report any information in these boxes.
