ECO-SENSE

Eco-Sense is the student club on campus which focuses on environmental issues. The students set up events and education for the campus community about various issues, as well as engage in community service in the D.C. area which benefits the environment and neighborhoods. They also run campaigns on specific issues where they would like to see change either on campus or more broadly in the region, nation, and/or world.

Most recently, during the 2005-2006 school year, the students ran a campaign as a part of the Energy Action coalition called the Campus Climate Challenge. They asked students if they would be willing to pay an extra $10 per year in order to see the university purchase 50% renewable energy like wind or solar by 2012. The student group gathered enough signatures to get this question on the student government general elections ballot in the Spring of 2006. The result of the vote on this referendum was 70% in favor of the school purchasing renewable energy beyond the 5% wind energy they currently buy.

Since this campaign success, the students have been in touch with Facilities Management and they are working together to identify the best options for the purchase of more renewable energy.
