2008 July 18
On Monday, 7/14/2008, and again on Tuesday, 7/15/2008, at approximately 10 p.m., a sex offense occurred near campus. The first incident on Monday, 7/14/2008, occurred on the 4200 block of Nebraska Avenue, NW. The second incident on Tuesday, 7/15/2008, occurred on the 4100 block of Massachusetts Ave., NW. The victim in both incidents is a current AU student.
The following was reported to the Metropolitan Police Department: On Monday, 7/14/2008, at 10 p.m., a male subject grabbed the genital area of the victim and attempted to pull her into nearby trees. During this occurrence, the victim screamed and broke free. The suspect fled on foot. On Tuesday, 7/15/2008, at 10 p.m., the same suspect attempted to approach the same victim and fled the scene.
Description of suspect:
Hispanic male, olive complexion, approximately 150 pounds and 5'08" tall. Suspect appeared to be in his early 30s or late 20s. He was described as wearing a blue shirt (possibly polo style) and blue jeans. This suspect is assumed to be the same person from Crime Alerts issued on 7/9/2008 and 7/11/2008.

Safety Tips
- Walk in groups whenever possible and look out for each other.
- Avoid isolated and dark areas.
- Carry your cell phone and keep it accessible.
- If you are approached, take note of the person's appearance, clothing, and anything unusual that will help identify the individual.
- Be aware of the emergency telephones (yellow boxes on pillars, blue lights phone towers and red telephones) located on campus, in building lobbies, elevators, and in parking lots.

The American University Department of Public Safety (AUDPS) notifies the campus community when crimes are reported to AUDPS or the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) which the University believes represent a continuing threat to its students or employees, in a manner consistent with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. The University uses its best efforts to provide information that is both accurate and helpful, but community members should recognize that the University is able to relay information only as it is reported to AUDPS from MPD. Community members are encouraged to report external incidents to AUDPS to assist in the effective implementation of this program.
