Laptop Security
One of the most common crimes that occurs on campus is laptop theft. Although laptop thefts have declined dramatically since 2007, they still remain a major concern, especially in Bender Library. Students who bring their laptops into the library are advised to not leave them on tables or at workstations under any circumstance, even for just a few minutes. Either take it with you, have someone you trust watch it for you, or secure it to the table using a laptop lock.
Students also have the option of purchasing one of two theft deterrence software programs: Lojack and PC/Mac PhoneHome. Lojack, available for $89.99 for a three-year subscription, is integrated into the computer's BIOS and allows the laptop to be tracked by police. Lojack is available for both Macs and PCs. PC PhoneHome and Mac PhoneHome, by Brigadoon Security Group, are software-based programs that send a stealth e-mail message containing the laptop's location to a predetermined e-mail address whenever the computer gets an internet connection. PC and Mac PhoneHome are available for a one-time fee of $29.95.
