Lost and Found Property Procedures

The American University Police Department (AUPD) is a resource for persons that have misplaced valuable and crucial items on the American University Campus. Valuable items are defined as items having a value of over $50. We will accept and store items of value for ninety (90) days and attempt to contact the owner directly if the lost item has identification.

Report Lost Property

Individuals needing assistance locating lost property should complete an online Lost Property Report or call 202-885-2527. Lost, stolen or damaged Metro U-Passes should be reported online.

Report Found Property

Individuals that find unattended property on campus should contact AUPD immediately by calling 202-885-2527.  A police officer will be dispatched to your location to collect the property.

Valuable Items

Valuable items are defined as items having a value of over $50.

Crucial Items

AUPD considers items with personal or secure information (i.e. prescriptions, wallets, purses, keys, cell phones, currency, etc) crucial items that will require AUPD to attempt to notify the owner of lost property.

Identifiable Property

AUPD employees will attempt to contact the owner directly on valuable or crucial items, with any identifying information. Property will be logged into the database, with the owner’s information (i.e. first and last name and phone number).

Found Property Retention

Occasionally persons finding lost or misplaced property will turn these items into AUPD. Valuable or crucial items will be entered into the database and retained for ninety (90) days. Items not meeting the above criteria will be held for one (1) business day and discarded or donated. Items that are perishable, soiled or hazardous will be immediately discarded.

Property Return

Property held by AUPD is available for pick-up at the Public Safety Building, Monday through Friday, 9:00am until 5:00pm. The owner must present a photograph identification card. AUPD retains the right to refuse return if proof of ownership cannot be determined.

Information for Campus Buildings

Locations where items are frequently left, including the Mary Graydon Center, Jacobs Fitness Center, Residential Halls, Bender Library, among others, may decide to retain property pursuant to their individual practices and uses. This could include lost and found procedures designed for their unique uses, experiences and customer expectations.
