Public Safety

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the American University Department of Public Safety to protect the lives and property of the university community. We are dedicated to the concepts of collective and personal excellence at the highest level, uncompromising integrity, and continuous improvement in order to enhance the public safety and protection of life and property. We aim to reduce crime within our community.

We will fulfill this mission by setting goals and objectives for the agency as a whole as well as for the individuals who comprise it, practicing the values of the agency and by cultivating relationships with the university community and local and federal agencies in a manner that inspires mutual confidence and trust. We acknowledge that it takes a community commitment to resolve issues and improve the safety of the university.


The American University Department of Public Safety will establish an internationally renowned reputation for providing superior and unrivaled public safety services to all members of the American University community.


Paramount to our mission, the following values guide our work and decisions and assist us in contributing to the American University community in a constructive manner. They are the foundation upon which our operation is founded:

Professional Responsibility and Development

As members of the American University Department of Public Safety, we are expected to:

  • Strive to meet and exceed the responsibilities of our assigned job duties.
  • To be responsible for our actions and accountable to our supervisors and to the university community to which we serve.
  • Be leaders in the areas of responsibility and accountability by setting goals and precisely measuring objectives within a time limit that supports reaching the department’s mission and annual goals.
  • Know the laws, university procedures and department written directives that will aid us in performing our duties and serving the community.
  • Strive for individual improvement in areas which we or our supervisors see potential for development.
  • Be able to detect problems within our job assignments and be capable decision makers, crime reducers and problem solvers.
  •  Enhance our level of technical knowledge, training and education through enrollment in department, university, local or federally offered classes, trainings and seminars.
Community Responsiveness

As members of the American University Department of Public Safety we:

  • Exhibit a compassionate and responsive attitude toward the community and express a genuine desire to satisfy the needs of the community.

As members of the American University Department of Public Safety we:

  • Adhere to the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics as published by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
  • Never compromise the integrity of the police department. The integrity of our public safety officers will be above reproach. We will constantly strive to reach the highest standards of honesty and integrity.
