Purpose of the training: To clearly define the role of the Building Marshal
both prior to and during a building evacuation.
Facilitator(s): Jorge Abud and Pat Kelshian
Participants:
Building Marshals and Alternate
Building
Marshals
Equipment/supplies
provided: Copy of the Emergency Management
Procedures, backpack, hat, armband, ID holder,
flashlight, first aid kit, whistle, and extra
flashlight batteries, toothbrush and toothpaste,
bottled water, notepad and pencil, 2 glowsticks,
EAS identification card.
Responsibilities:
- In the event of a campus
wide evacuation, Building Marshals
will receive a phone call from an Emergency
Response Team member advising of the need to
evacuate the building(s).
- Become familiar with
your building, the departmental evacuation plans
for your building, the department liaison(s)
and the EAS members from your building.
Coordinate the evacuation of your building
with these people. Make sure everyone understands his/her responsibilities.
- Become familiar with the
Rescue Assistance areas in your building for
individuals with disabilities. If you are not
sure of the location, please contact Disability
Support Services (DSS) at x3315 or consult the
DSS website at www.american.edu/disabilitysupport.
-
Become familiar with the information given to
students regarding emergency evacuation.
- Both Public Safety and
Building Marshals will be provided with a confidential
information list of students requiring emergency
evacuation assistance while in each designated
building. This information will be distributed
and updated by Disability Support Services (x3315).
Building marshals should be able to communicate
the location of the building’s Areas of
Rescue Assistance to on-site Public Safety or
fire department personnel.
- Depending on the nature of the evacuation,
you should consult the confidential information
list provided by Disability Support Services
prior to making a building wide evacuation.
If you have enough time, ask any individual(s)
with a disability to evacuate while you have
the use of the elevators. Once you pull the
fire alarm, you will no longer be able to use
the elevators in your building. Your ERT team
member will provide you with guidance to determine
if you have enough time to evacuate DSS individuals
first.
- Be conscious of the language you use when
referring to individuals with disabilities.
(See handout on “Disability Etiquette.”)
- If you are missing evacuation plans for any
department(s) in your building, notify Tanisha
Jagoe at x2722 or by e-mail at jagoe@american.edu.
- Pull and tag fire alarms.
- Make sure all department liaisons have verified
their rosters upon evacuation. If there
is a campus wide evacuation, report safe
evacuation to ERT member.
- Go to the evacuation site.
- If the university community is advised to
stay in place, rather than evacuate, you will
be notified to put orange tape up in front of
doors to indicate no exit or entry until further
advised. However, do not force anyone to stay
if they are unwilling to do so. You may also
want to use flyers to communicate what is happening.
