Health insurance is mandatory
for all full-time degree, resident, and international
students, unless the student is covered under
another comparable health insurance plan. Health
insurance will be charged to your student account
unless the university receives a health insurance
waiver. A waiver can only be submitted if you
have your own health insurance. You may also submit
a waiver for an insurance charge already on your
student account.
Waivers are accepted only through
the internet, and students must go to their my.american.edu
portal to complete and submit the waiver! Health
insurance waivers must be filled out by
the deadline date (usually around August 31) specified
by the Student
Health Center. If the student
has missed the filing deadline, Insurance Waiver
Appeals are not normally granted. If you do appeal,
you must submit your appeal in writing to the
Director of the Health Center bruey@american.edu.
To contact the Health Center, please call (202)
885-3380.
You will need to go to your my.american.edu
PORTAL to waive your health insurance (Click on
Health and Wellness) (Click on Student Health
Insurance Plan) (Click on Waiver). Once you have
waived it, the charge will be removed from your
student account within the next two business days.
