Students who have a balance due remaining on their account after the start of classes are subject to a financial stop on their account. This stop will restrict them from registration, requesting transcripts and receiving diplomas.
Students that have an incorrect or outdated billing address will also receive a stop on their account. Students with these billing related stops should contact Student Accounts as soon as possible to ensure that all billing statements and other communication are being sent to the correct address (See Billing Address Stop and Update).
Other offices at American University can place stops on student accounts. For
information on those stops, please contact the appropriate office:
- Library Stop: American University Library – (202) 885-3221
- Health Center Stop: Student Health Center – (202) 885-3380
- Housing and Dining Stop: Housing and Dining Programs – (202) 885-3370
- Judicial Affairs Stop: Judicial Affairs and Mediation Services – (202) 885-3300
If a student’s courses are dropped (canceled) due to nonpayment, a financial restriction will also be placed on his or her account. Restrictions may be removed following the reinstatement of all courses originally dropped. To reinstate courses, the student must make arrangements with the Collections Office and pay the account in full (including a $100 reinstatement fee and all associated finance charges). The university reserves the right to delay clearance until a personal check clears a financial institution. For more information, please see the following page: Registration Cancellation.
