On April 21, 2008, President Neil Kerwin signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment pledging that AU would work to achieve carbon neutrality. AU committed to:
- Initiate the development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality.
- Initiate two or more tangible actions to reduce greenhouse gases, while a more comprehensive plan is being developed.
- Make the action plan, inventory, and periodic progress reports available publicly.
Visit the ACUPCC Web site (see Quick Links) to follow AU's documented progress toward carbon neutrality.
To build support for this effort among college and university administrations across America, we also encourage other presidents to join this initiative and become signatories to this commitment.
"I am confident that we can meet the expectation to educate our students and the entire university community on global warming, create institutional responses, and embrace the commitment that AU continue its leadership role as a socially responsible university with strong values and actionable ideals."Neil Kerwin, President of American University
